When preparing for the surgery, they told us Tyler could be out of school up to two weeks post-op. We knew it was a possibility but didn't think two weeks of recovery was going to be the reality. Well, we were so very wrong. We had a few surprises along the way that may have contributed to the lengthy recovery (although more and more people say they have had the same experience). The first surprise being that "outpatient surgery" became "inpatient surgery" by 1:00 p.m. on surgery day because Tyler was having such a difficult time swallowing. They knew he was not able to properly hydrate himself so we stayed overnight to keep him on the i.v. While things didn't look considerably better the next morning as far as his drinking was concerned, he made enough of a turn mid-day that we were allowed to go home. Throughout the next five days we had a series of ups and downs. We were able to keep him hydrated through a creative method that Kevin came up with, but he was not ready to eat much of anything and was miserable to say the least. After a very difficult night Saturday, we had a very low key Easter Sunday and actually did not go to church, which Kevin and I realized was a first for both of us. Thankfully, the Monday following surgery Tyler started to improve daily. He started eating again which gave him a little energy and he became more responsive. Each day he continued to get a little better and by Friday I was so happy to see glimpses of my boy emerge throughout the day. It had been 10 days since Tyler had been himself at all and I was elated that he was finally doing so much better. We got a clear report at the Dr. last Monday and he returned to school the following day. It was a very long two weeks and much harder than any of us anticipated. We are all so thankful it is behind us and Tyler is back to himself and tonsil free. I purposefully did not take pictures of this event because I will remember it regardless of whether it was captured on film or not. However, I do have two pictures of Tyler and Megan in his hospital room. She was so concerned and so nurturing that I had to take a picture. I will try to post it soon.
